''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .--------------. | 1 |--| Introduction | '---' '--------------' SuperTux is a single-player 2D platform game very similar to Super Mario Bros 1. You control Tux (the penguin) and must jump, run, get coins, avoid and kill enemies until you reach the end of all levels. Currently there no bosses. This guide tries to list most things found in SuperTux version 0.1.3. Please also check SuperTux-related sites. It was first written for version 0.1.2, and then updated to 0.1.3. Gameplay has not changed between these versions, only new bonus levels were added. This guide was written using at most 75 characters on each line, except in tables, where it was needed to use more characters. Feel free to send feedback about this guide. If you see anything wrong, contact me. ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .---------. | 2 |--| Credits | '---' '---------' SuperTux made by SuperTux Team http://super-tux.sourceforge.net/ This document was created using Gvim on Linux http://www.vim.org/ The ASCII Art version of SuperTux logo was converted from image using JavE, and then hand-adjusted by me http://www.jave.de/ This guide is hosted on SuperTux Fan Site http://www.supertux.info/ http://cd.bromley.ac.uk/supertux/ (old link, won't work anymore) Thanks for SuperTux team, who added my level "You have 1 minute" into version 0.1.3. ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .----------. | 3 |--| Controls | '---' '----------' The keyboard keys are configurable. It is possible to use joystick, but it is not possible to configure its buttons using game menus. Here is an example joystick and the function of each button: .'"""""""""""""'. not used .' _ `. _ (1) Jump / _| |_ Joy (3)\ walk _| |_ walk ( |_ _| Pad (2) ) left |_ _| right (2) Run/Fire \ |_| (1) / |_| `. .-----. .' (3) Menu `...' `...' duck No more than 3 buttons of a joystick are used. The third button has the same function of "Esc" key on keyboard. If for some reason the joystick does not work, or you want to disable it, exit the game and open the file "~/.supertux/config". Change this line: (joystick 0) The number is the joystick identifier. 0 means first joystick, -1 means no joystick. In that file you can also change the joystick buttons and tweak the "deadzone". ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .-----------. | 4 |--| Movements | '---' '-----------' - Walk Press left or right. - Run Keep "run/fire" button pressed while walking. - Duck Press "duck" button. Only possible when "BigTux". - Fire Press "run/fire" button. Only possible when "FireTux". You can fire at most 2 fireballs at same time. - Jump Press "jump" button. 4 tiles height. - Running Jump Press "jump" button while running. 5 tiles height and longer reach. - Duck jump Press "jump" button while pressing "duck" button. Only possible when "BigTux". This sometimes is useful for more accurate jumps, specially when ceiling is low. - Walking duck While walking or running, press "duck" button. This is useful to pass by narrow paths when "BigTux". - Carry an ice block Jump on "Mr. IceBlock" once, to disable it. Then, when pressing "run/ fire" button, touch it. To throw "Mr. IceBlock", release the button. Throwing it will kill any enemies and bump any block on its path. It may hurt you too. ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .-------. | 5 |--| Items | '---' '-------' Most items are found inside "?" blocks. Jump under the box to release the item. There are also some hidden boxes which are solid but invisible until you bump them, but they won't release any item. There are some wooden boxes that will contain a random number of coins, and others that will contain nothing. Wooden boxes with nothing inside can be destroyed by jumping under them when "BigTux", or when throwing "Mr. IceBlock". - Coin Most abundant item. The only item which can also be found out of boxes. Each 100 coins collected will give you an extra life. - Egg (looks like a snowball) Only available when "SmallTux", will transform the hero into "SuperTux". - FireFlower Only available when not "SmallTux", will transform the hero into "FireTux". - Star Gives temporary invincibility. - Little penguin Gives an extra life. Note: In this guide, I will use "BigTux" when something is available for both "SuperTux" and "FireTux". ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .---------. | 6 |--| Enemies | '---' '---------' All enemies will hurt you if you touch them. If you are "FireTux" and touch an enemy, you will be transformed into "SuperTux". If you are "SuperTux" and touch an enemy, you will be transformed into "SmallTux". In both cases, you will have some seconds of invincibility (during this time, Tux will be flashing). You will die if you are "SmallTux" and touch any enemy. You will also die if you touch the bottom edge of level. All enemies will die if hit by "Mr. Bomb" explosion, by "Mr. IceBlock" or by "fireball". Most will die when Tux jump on them. If there is an enemy over a block, it will die if you jump under the block. - Mr. Snowball Walks left or right. - Bouncing Snowball Keeps jumping (or bouncing) while moving left or right. - Flying Snowball Moves up and down in mid-air. - Mr. Bomb Walks left or right. If Tux jumps on "Mr. Bomb", it will explode after some seconds. - Mr. IceBlock Walks left or right. If Tux jumps on "Mr. IceBlock", Tux can carry and throw it. "Mr. IceBlock" will die if Tux jumps on it about 10 times. - Fish Goes up and down from water. - Spiky Walks left or right. Tux can't touch "Spiky". - Jumpy Spiky Keeps jumping up and down. Tux can't touch "Jumpy Spiky". There are also two "bad things" that aren't really enemies, but can hurt Tux: - Stalactite Will fall from ceiling when Tux is near. It will kill any enemy just under it. After touching floor, it is destroyed. - Flame A little fireball moving in a circle. Can't be destroyed. ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .--------. | 7 |--| Levels | '---' '--------' Below is a list of secrets of each level. Secrets are things you don't see, but hide items or paths. Some useful tips are also described for some levels. .--------------------. | World1 - Icyisland | '--------------------' 1. Welcome to Antarctica - Just before finish line, there are 7 coins placed like an arrow pointing to left. Follow the arrow and you will find 10 coins inside the wall just below the "Jumpy Spiky". 4. Tobgle Road - After 4 groups of 2 "?" blocks and 2 wooden boxes, there will be 2 "Jumpy Spiky" and 6 coins. Don't get the coins and go inside the wall under them. There is a block with an extra life below the last coin. 7. Oh no! More Snowballs! - Just after 4 little snow platforms with 2 coins between them, there is a hidden path inside the wall with a fish. Run inside it to land on a platform. The last "?" block of that platform contains an extra life. 8. Stone Cold - At start of level, just after 3 "?" blocks, you will find a very high platform with lots os coins. There are two hidden blocks nearby (before the platforms) that will allow you to reach those coins. 9. Grumbel's Sense of Snow - When you find some type of "bridge" with some floating blocks above it, jump on those blocks and keep always going near the sky. After you find two "?" blocks and a "Mr. Snowball", do a running jump onto a platform with 6 coins. Do a running jump again and you will find 20 coins and an extra life. 10. 23rd Airborne - At start of level, go back and you will find an "egg" or "fireflower" inside the wall. - After 3 pipes with "Jumpy Spiky", one another "Jumpy Spiky" and two "Mr. IceBlock", there is a hidden path inside the wall with 48 coins. 11. Night Chill - At start of level, there is a hidden block that allows you to reach the "?" block. - After a very tall snow hill, there will be 6 wide platforms, with 6 "?" blocks. At right of last "?" block, there are 2 hidden blocks. Use them to do a running jump to a platform with 9 coins. Do another running jump to find an extra life. 14. Entrance to the Cave - There is a hidden path inside a very tall wall with 2 floating blocks. 15. Under the Ice - At start of level, go one step down, then go left. This is a hidden path with 30 coins, only available when "SmallTux". - When you find 5 wooden boxes, 2 of them will contain coins. In addition, there is an extra life just above them. 17. '...or is it just me?' - At start of level, there is a hidden block. Inside the wall near this block there is one "egg" or "fireflower". 18. Ice in the Hole - At start of level, go back, inside the wall. Climb it, and jump over the top edge of level. Go right until you fall. There will be 1 extra life and 1 "egg" or "fireflower" there. - there is a hidden "star" inside the wall just above the first pipe, near 1 "?" block and some "Mr. IceBlock". - After 2 pipes with 5 coins, there will be a single block on floor, under a hole in ceiling. There are 2 hidden blocks above it. 20. End of the Tunnel - Go under the third wooden platform. If you are "BigTux", you can get 21 coins and one life. If you are "SmallTux", you can get only 9 coins. - After 4 "?" blocks and a "Bouncing Snowball" on a ladder, go down. There are hidden blocks creating an invisible floor. Inside the wall under the ladder there is 1 extra life. 21. A Path in the Clouds - On second ice column, you can fall and do a running jump to find an extra life. - You can stand on all high clouds after the second. - If you walk above the top edge of level, you will eventually find 183 coins almost at end of level. 22. No more Mr Ice Guy - Under third suspended platform, there are two fishes. The left one hides one invincibility and does have some hidden blocks below it (so, it is safe to stand under it). The right one is a hidden block to help you. 23. The Escape - You can stand on two clouds just after 5 "?" blocks, 3 "Mr. IceBlock" and lots of coins in lower platform. 24. The Shattered Bridge - After one very tall pipe, there is a hidden passage under the next bridge, exactly at water level. It will lead to 22 coins and 1 extra life. 25. Arctic Ruins - There are some hidden blocks to help you reach higher platforms. - There is a hidden path inside some blocks, at right of a "?" block, near a "Bouncing Snowball". 26. The Castle of Nolok - No secrets in the last level of World1. Good luck! The next table lists the width, the maximum time, the number of coins outside blocks, the number of hidden blocks and the number of extra lives in each level. Note, however, that not always is possible to get all coins or items of a level. Sometimes you must make a choice and leave some of them behind. .---------------------------------------------------------------. | #| Level name |Width| Time|Coins|HdBxs|Lives| |--|------------------------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | 1| Welcome to Antarctica | 310 | 300 | 80 | 0 | 1 | | 2| The Journey Begins | 300 | 300 | 35 | 0 | 0 | | 3| Via Nostalgica | 390 | 300 | 36 | 0 | 0 | | 4| Tobgle Road | 270 | 300 | 50 | 0 | 1 | | 5| The Somewhat Smaller Bath | 355 | 300 | 61 | 0 | 0 | | 6| The Frosted Fields | 510 | 300 | 0 | 0 | 1 | | 7| Oh no! ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .------------------------------. | 8 |--| Level editor (version 0.1.2) | '---' '------------------------------' The SuperTux 0.1.2 built-in level editor is good, but is not perfect. In fact, it misses some important things. Most people will use it, save the level and edit the level file by hand in a text editor. This is needed to change properties of enemies, add reset-points and even add some tiles that aren't available in editor's tile list. We all hope better level editor in next versions of SuperTux. .--------------------. | Empty wooden boxes | '--------------------' The level editor does not have empty wooden box tile, so, if you want to place them in your level, you need to place them by hand in level file. However, I found a way to add those tiles to level editor. Just add this after line 350 of file "/usr/local/share/supertux/images/tilesets/supe rtux.stgt" from your SuperTux version 0.1.2. (newer versions should not need this "patch"). ;; Brick with NO bonus content (tile (id 77) (images "brick0.png") (brick #t) ; (data 1) ; (next-tile 84) (solid #t) ) ;; Brick with NO bonus content (tile (id 78) (images "brick1.png") (brick #t) ; (data 1) ; (next-tile 84) (solid #t) ) You must also change one of the initial lines from this: (tilegroup (name "Block") (tiles 27 28 29 47 48 49 50 51 52 61 62)) to this: (tilegroup (name "Block") (tiles 27 28 29 47 48 49 50 51 52 61 62 77 78)) Now, the breakable wooden boxes will be available in "Block" section of level editor. ........................................................................... ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' .---. .------------------------------. | 9 |--| Level editor (version 0.1.3) | '---' '------------------------------' The version 0.1.3 almost fixed above "bug". In this version, there is no need to add more lines, because they are already there. However, those tiles are listed in no tilegroup, so, are not accessible from level editor. To fix this, edit "/usr/local/share/supertux/images/tilesets/supertux.s tgt" file, changing one of the initial lines from this: (tilegroup (name "Block") (tiles 27 28 29 47 48 49 50 51 52 61 62)) to this: (tilegroup (name "Block") (tiles 27 28 29 47 48 49 50 51 52 61 62 77 78)) ...........................................................................
